NASA Lands The Curiosity Rover on Mars
At 10:32 p.m. PDT on Aug 5th 2012 NASA finally lands the Curiosity Rover ready to begin it’s 2-year $2.5 billion mission on Mars. Soon after the Rover had landed, the first images of the red planet were sent back to NASA’s Mission Control. The images show the Rovers shadow, wheel, the surface of Mars, as well as the rim of the Gale Crater off in the horizon.
Although the Rover is thought to be in good shape it will now undergo extensive testing to make sure everything is in proper working order. WIth such a difficult trip and landing it’s no surprise that NASA only went for the essentials needed on the Rover. This specific piece of space exploration equipment is four times less powerful then the iPhone 4s, yet it has enough to do everything it needs. Below is the comparative specs.
Mission Control at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory were ecstatic by the amazing landing. Pictures and video soon hit all social media sites with news of the Rovers landing. NASA also created the Curiosity Rover it’s own Twitter handle in which you could follow live updates. Many of the employees at Mission Control shared their excitement and photos via twitter as well.
President Obama praised the hardworking team at NASA for their amazing and ground breaking feat.
More images will be coming within the next couple of days, weeks, and month as the Rover explores the Martian Planet looking for the building blocks of life.
