Phil, I think you should really address that article by Popkin. I love the fact that you’re laid back and only coming off as irritated when mentioning the article, but this piece of garbage called “journalism” really ticked me off. It’s not only blasting the top 10 Youtubers, but insulting both their integrity and ambition as well. The writer even insults the audience, stating that “we” will watch like mindless zombies because 1) we are loyal and 2) we have no taste, as long as it “strikes our funny bone.” Such grouping mechanism in writing is a major fallacy, and a bunch of sh*t. Every major Youtuber starts out small, and grows because the audience enjoys what they see and want more, or because the Youtuber feeds them what they want to see. That being said, the top 10 are master entrepreneurs and should be treated as such. You’ve stated before that you did not start making videos for money, and while you do have merchandise now, it is still apparent now that your videos are for your satisfaction only. It just so happens that millions of viewers also like to watch said enjoyment.
This article has caused such a fire inside me because she writes with such hatred to young business men and women. It’s like she hates the fact that web shows can make money. So the question I pose is: is she writing web articles for MSNBC for free? Hell no. Ever since humans have harnessed technology, new business plans have been created and unleashed into the public, because let’s be honest: it’s all about money, and then doubling it. If anything, she’s upset that the top ten have more viewers AND responders than she could ever hope for.
Phil, I implore you, tear this b*tch a new one! At the very least, call her out. It’s not about pride, it’s about facts. You have the power of millions at your finger tips. Make a statement…or at least command your minions to flame her article to death. :D
